Local Tips: Top 10 Best of Brissie 04:36 PM on Mon 19 May 2014

Here at Base we love Brisbane so much that we have 3 hostels in the city! Our local staff know all the best bits so here’s what to do in Brissie...

1. Free Brisbane Ferry

Best way to get a glimpse of Brisbane city – and snap up some amazing photo opportunities! The red City Hopper ferry is free and will guide you around the city, from Southbank to the Storey Bridge. You can hop on and hop off as you please.

2. Southbank

Southbank is home its very own man made beach. Yep, that right! A sandy beach lagoon right in the heart of Brisbane city! Simply stroll across the Brisbane River to the south side of the city and you will find green parklands, a gigantic ferris wheel, weekend markets, bars, cafes & the Museum of Modern Art.

3. Fortitude Valley

Great for a night out! Fortitude Valley gives Brisbane its creative and alternative edge. Check out the Markets, Boutique Shops, Bars, Live Music & Chinatown.

4. West End

Where the cool kids hang! West End is Brisbane’s cultural hub with a bustling art scene, international food stores, second hand and vintage shops, quirky bars & weekend markets.

5. Cuddle a Koala

Australia Zoo – the most talked about zoo on the backpacker grapevine! Made popular by Steve Irwin, you will find all sorts of animals here include Aussie animals and make sure you allow at least 4 hours here! Alternatively, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is located just a short drive from Brisbane. Get up and close and personal at the world’s largest Koala Sanctuary.

6. XXXX Brewery

An absolute Australian icon – it is pretty safe to say that XXXX Beer is the face of Australian Beer history! This activity is a cheapie and a must do.

7. Moreton Island

Moreton Island is absolute paradise and just a one hour ferry ride from Brisbane. Pick ups from Base are provided, along with a choice of many on island activities. Explore the Shipwreck, Snorkel, Segway or Quad Bike along the beach, scuba dive, jump on a banana boat, feed dolphins or try your hand at sandboarding! This little touch of paradise is a secret amongst the backpacker trail and a must do!

8. Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens

The gardens are just a 15 minute bus journey from Brisbane CBD and home to acres of sub tropical gardens. Chill out for the day, have a BBQ and make sure that you take the walk to the top of Mt Cootha for stunning views of Brisbane.

9. Theme Parks

Warner Bros Movie World, Dream World, Wet n Wild Water Park & Sea World are just a short drive from Brisbane. The theme parks prove a great day out! Chat to the staff at Base Reception who will be more than happy to organise entry and transfers.

10.  Bike the City

Brisbane is one of the most bike friendly cities in Australia with kilometres of dedicated bike trails that will lead you along the picturesque Brisbane River. There are bike stations located throughout the city which allow you to pick up a bike in one place, and drop it off in another.

For more information on activities in Brisbane chat to the staff at either Base Uptown, Base Central or Base Embassy – the local staff have stuck around in Australia’s sunny city for a reason!
