On average NZ Job Search will have between 60 - 120 backpacker jobs listed (depending on the season).  Currently it is possible to find work in both skilled and unskilled fields as New Zealand is experiencing a skills shortage in all areas from health care, to IT and accounting to forestry.  This is a result of increasing numbers of skilled workers leaving New Zealand to travel and work abroad.

Work in New Zealand ranges from labouring and construction work, short and long term temp work, bar and cafe work, to seasonal work, fruit picking jobs, IT support jobs and much more. It is normally easiest to find a job in hospitality, construction, administration and IT employment within New Zealands largest cities such as Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.  Remember that over 25% of our population live in Auckland, so Auckland has the biggest variety of jobs.

As part of our job search service we will assist anyone who wants to work in New Zealand with opening up bank accounts, applying for IRD Numbers (NZ tax numbers), information on how to apply for a working holiday visa, help preparing your resume and arranging interview times with employers.

In order to work in New Zealand you need to have either a Work Permit, Visa or be part of a Working Holiday Scheme. For more information on Working Visas and the most current information please visit the official government website at http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ or contact jobs@nzjs.co.nz.

A Work Visa is:  An endorsement in your passport to allow you to enter or re-enter New Zealand.  It shows you have permission to travel to New Zealand and may be granted a Work Permit when you arrive.  The visa may be single, for one journey, or multiple, for more than one journey.

A Work Permit is:  An endorsement in your passport, which allows you to work in New Zealand.  It will state the expiry date of your permit and the conditions of your permit.  The conditions may include the type of employment, the employer's name and the location in New Zealand you are permitted to work in.

Who needs a Visa or Permit to work in New Zealand?
You will not need a visa or permit to work in New Zealand if you are:

  • A New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand Resident Permit holder (to re-enter you need a current New Zealand Returning Resident Visa) or
  • An Australian citizen or an Australian resident who holds a current Australian resident return visa or
  • If you are one of a group of people who are also exempt from the requirement to hold a Permit to be in New Zealand or
  • I if you are a Business visitor to New Zealand who will stay more than three months in any one-year.

You may apply for a Work Visa or Permit if you:

  • Hold an offer of employment for which you are qualified and there are no suitable New Zealanders available or if you meet one of the SPECIAL CATEGORIES or exchanges the Government has approved.
  • You may apply for a Work Visa before you travel to New Zealand (the total stay may be up to three years) or re-enter New Zealand if you hold a Work Permit.
  • You may apply for a further Work Permit, if you arrived in New Zealand on a Work Visa.  The maximum normal stay is three years from the date you first arrived in New Zealand.
  • If you are already in New Zealand as a visitor you may apply for a Work Permit for a total stay of nine months from the date of your arrival as a visitor.

What is a Working holiday scheme?

Under the working holiday schemes, young citizens of approved countries may travel to New Zealand for a holiday and undertake employment during their stay.

What does it allow you to do?

Depending on the country you are from it will allow you to work in New Zealand for up to 12 months.  Please find below the conditions for each country.

Who is eligible?

For all information on countries that are eligible for the Working Holiday Visa Scheme please see http://www.immigration.govt.nz/whs for the most up-to-date information.

Applicants must: Be aged between 18 - 30, and not be accompanied by children, and provide evidence of sufficient funds (this varies depending on the scheme) to purchase return travel.  Holders of such permits are not able come to New Zealand for any further working holiday under the scheme, and must not undertake permanent employment unless they apply for and obtain a work permit.

Ability to change status: Once in New Zealand holders of such permits may, at any time during the time of that permit, apply to change their status to that of a long-term temporary worker, or a student, or a New Zealand resident.

How to apply

Check the government website at www.immigration.govt.nz for complete information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work without a tax number?
No you cannot. To get a tax number you must have a working holiday visa or permit which you will need to apply for. Please see the section on Visas for more detail.

How do I get a tax number?
Come in to NZ job Search and fill in a form. We will send this off for you. If you do not have a permanent address we will give you a free call number to phone and get your tax number from. This will take 8-10 working days to be processed for you.

Do I need a bank account to work?
Many companies will pay you by direct debit into a bank account. Other companies will pay you by cheque, or cash. We can get bank account numbers for NZ Job Search members. Most banks have a range of services including cheque, saving, and long-term deposit accounts.  It’s usually cheaper to use an EFTPOS card than withdraw money at the bank.  Most employers will require that you open a bank account before starting work, as most wages will be paid directly into your account.  People generally get paid weekly but some companies do pay fortnightly or monthly.  New Zealand has an Employment Relations Act, which requires both casual and full-time staff to have an Employment contract.

Can you get me a job outside Auckland?
Yes we can. You can see all our current job vacancies by going to the 'View Jobs' page of this website.

Do I have to come into your office to register?
Yes you do, but you can start the process now online.

How long will registration take?
About 30 minutes.

Can you get me a job before I arrive in New Zealand?
Most employers want to meet candidates before they offer them a job, however most of the jobs we have listed are looking for people to start immediately. Most candidates find a job within two weeks of arriving.

Whats the cost of living like?
The cost of living in New Zealand is relatively cheap compared to other countries, as our dollar is weak against other currencies (i.e. one New Zealand dollar is equivalent to 0.40 Great British Pounds or 0.60 Euro). Food is relatively cheap, for example a litre of milk is $2, bread $2.50, and butter $2.

Where to stay? It’s relatively easy to find short-term accommodation in New Zealand.  If you are going to be staying in one area to work, it is best to check which hostels offer long-term accommodation. Base Backpackers hostels are NZ Job Search agents and can provide accommodation as well as assisting you to find work.  See the find a hostel page of this website for more information. Alternatively, you can rent a house or apartment.  Rent ranges from $95 to $200 a week in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.  Usually you’ll have to organise your own bedroom furniture as houses generally come unfurnished.  If you are prepared to pay a bit more however, you may be able to get a fully furnished house or apartment.  Rent is usually paid weekly and expenses such as electricity, food and phone are shared between others in the house. NZ Job Search can offer assistance in searching for rental properties.
