Base Backpackers St Kilda: So much room for activities!
What a week! For those of you planning on visiting Melbourne for a few days or more, St Kilda is the place to stay. The beach side suburb of Melbourne is just 10 minutes by tram from the city centre and oozes character, creativity, night life, beach & all round weirdness. Base Backpackers is located right in the heart of St Kilda and just a 5 minute walk to the beach.
I had been in New Zealand for the previous 3 months and was excited about getting back to Australia. First stop? Melbourne! One of my favourite cities in Aus! There is something for everyone here - a good night out, culture, food from across the globe, quirky shops, sport, markets and surf coast either side of the city.
The team at Base Backpackers St Kilda instantly made me feel at home... offering me cake, asking about my travels & giving me a guided tour of the hostel right to my room. They were fun, outgoing and obviously pretty stoked about life. Clinton at the Travel Desk knew everything about everything and helped me plan my week ahead. Rochelle at the Jobsearch Desk gave me information about taxback. And Josie & Crin at the reception desk eagerly greeted me whilst dressed in Togas.
The Team at Base are keen fitness enthusiasts. Each day there is a free activity for guests; city activities, Yoga, weekly Run Club, Stand up Paddleboarding, ball games & more – dependent on the weather!
If you are keen to meet other travellers (as most of us are) – the bar is smack bang in the middle of the hostel with nightly games, meal & drink specials and a great atmosphere to meet some new peeps.
The first night that I had arrived into Melbourne I took part in Big Willy’s Bingo... loads of fun! The following night was Base Trivia Night. Don’t be fooled – this Trivia night is delivered with a twist and ended with the hostel’s very own Bar Manager Aydn, rapping to Aussie hip hop in a onesie!
Each night there were cheap meal deals including a Free BBQ, $5 Roast, $5 Burgers & more. There was live music from Casey Dean one night of the week as well as Goon Pong & free champagne for the ladies.
I had such a great week! Make sure you visit the Great Ocean Road when arriving in Melbourne. I recommend an overnight tour as it takes roughly 4 hours from Melbourne to the 12 Apostles (a long day). I did a 3 day tour that inlcuded a sunset and a morning and the 12 apostles, as well as the Grampians National Park.
A trip to Phillip Island is also a must! This is where you can get up close and personal with a Koala, feed a wallaby, check out the surf beaches & watch the penguin parade.
There are free city walking tours each day in Melbourne at 10:30am... it was a great way to explore the city and decide what I wanted to do. Eureka Skydeck is cheap and offers 360 degree views of Melbourne, and the Aquarium is also - I learnt a lot about Aussie marine life. Clinton planned everything for me at the Travel Desk and made sure that I got a discount.
I had such a great week in Melbourne: meeting new people & enjoying the quirkiness of Melbourne’s beach side suburb. I met some amazing peeps in the hostel and will catch up with them when I arrive in Sydney. Thanks to the team at Base for making my stay enjoyable!
The hostel had dorm rooms, female only dorms (that came with a towel, shampoo, conditioner & shower gel) & private rooms. There is a St Kilda shuttle bus that can deliver you from the hostel to the front door of the hostel.
Fun, Fun, Fun, Fun, Fun!
