Wellington is New Zealand's capital of cool03:09 PM on Tue 08 Jan 2013

On my first day in the lovely city of Wellington I immediately got lucky with the weather. It was sunny, warm with no wind (quite rare for Wellington)! After having just travelled up the West Coast on the South Island where it rained all day every day, it was such a nice change to be able to sit outside without my raincoat on. Of course, all good things must come to an end and the wind and rain came back within two days. Besides Wellington’s bipolar weather and the crazy wind, I have definitely fallen in love with this city!

Wellington is big enough to be a city, and small enough to get around easily by foot. It has a million brilliant cafes, lots of shops and a beach! All you need, really. One of my favourite places has to be Cuba Street, of course! An eccentric little street where you can find heaps of nice cafes, bars, shops, street artists and the famous bucket fountain. I also really enjoy Courtenay Place, where you can find every bar and restaurant imaginable, and of course Base Wellington. And they all do pretty sweet deals on food and drinks! Whenever I feel like venturing out of the city, I like to go to Newtown – a suburb just outside of Wellington City where you can also find loads of nice shops, cafes and bars. And of course, when it’s a rainy day there are so many galleries and museums to visit! Including the famous Te Papa museum, where I recently spend five hours and still only got to see the first and second floor, out of all six floors...

I am not the biggest party girl in the world, but I do go out for the night I like to start my night at Basement Bar for the $4 drinks Happy Hour and then continue my night on Courtenay Place or Cuba Street in one of the many bars Wellington has to offer. Another thing I love doing in Wellington is going out for lunch. There are so many restaurants that do special lunch deals and if you’re lucky you even get to sit outside and enjoy the sun. One of my favourite places has to be the contemporary Indian restaurant Tulsi on Cuba Street that does lunch for $7.90!

So far, I have really been enjoying Wellington and I am looking forward to spending the next four months in this lovely city. I will be drinking lots of coffee in the cafes, eating lots of yummy food in all the restaurants and hopefully spending all the sunny days on the beach when Welly’s weather is in a good mood!"
