If you just got to Australia you might be wondering why all the guys wear something that looks like a growing moustache... You are probably thinking, do Australians have no sense of fashion at all or are they just a tad creepy? Well, the explanation is simple: MOVEMBER.
What is November?! Put Moustache and November together and you have the answer!
It started 10 years ago as a joke between friends, a group of Australian guys in a pub thought it would be a good idea to bring back a cultural icon of the 70s - the moustache - use it for charity and raise awareness for prostate cancer and depression in men. 30 men grew a moustache for 30 days, this group would later become the Movember Foundation charity.
Since then Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and the Czech Republic. In 2011, over 854,000 people around the world got on board, raising AU$124 million.
There are two sides to every moustache. There is the fun, crazy side - growing mo's and having beers with your buddies, then there is the serious men's health side. The appeal of Movember to most guys is to have a good excuse to grow facial hair - be a bit disruptive, maybe upset the boss, but the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of any family history of cancer, and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
As you can see on our website the X of Base has grown a moustache too, meaning that most of the guys working for Base are part of the Movember movement. I will make sure to post photos at the end of the month!
Movember is all about bringing back the moustache, having fun and doing it for a serious cause so it is never too late to get involved!
