travelling van america

Now this is what we call an inspirational travel story...

At 90 years old, Norma has decided to hit the American roads in an RV and travel the country from top to bottom. From Michigan U.S, Norma had recently lost her husband and in the same two weeks, was diagnosed with cancer. Her son told Today, "we found ourselves sitting in the hospital talking about treatment options. You know the drill: surgery, then radiation and chemo. When the Doctor was finished he asked her how she would like to proceed."

He then went on to say "Norma looked at the young Doctor dead in the eye and with the strongest voice she could muster, said, “I’m 90-years-old, I’m hitting the road.”

Determined to leave a life of hospital beds and tests behind, Norma decided to join daughter in law Rami and husband Tim (and their 8 year old Poodle Ringo) on their retired journey across the States. The three travellers have already taken in Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Norma’s mind is still sharp, she’s not in any pain and she always dreamed of traveling. In fact, she and Leo always wanted to ride a hot air balloon together. “Norma and Leo had been clipping ads for hot air balloon rides for many years,” Ramie told Huffington Post. “After Leo died we found the tiny ads tucked in here and there around the house.”

Tim told the Huffington Post, "She knows our lifestyle. She said, ‘Yep. I think I’d like to go along.’ We see a spark in her eye that we haven’t seen in a very long time. She’s up for almost anything. She’s living life and not in an end-of-life mentality. She’s in the present moment." "We love traveling with her. We’ve been to a lot of these places, but we’re seeing them through fresh new eyes and it’s fun to see her reactions and meet people on the road. We go out of our way to make her smile and it becomes this ripple effect that’s powerful for all of us."

Rami went on to conclude "Since August we have traveled a little over 6,000 miles and we have no intentions of stopping anytime soon. We have no idea where or when it will end. We are living in the present moment." Keep on travelling Norma! You can follow her adventures on the Facebook page created by Tim: Driving Miss Norma.
