Christchurch Guest Mail04:03 PM on Tue 06 Dec 2011

The Other day we received an email off a lovely guest that was staying at Base Backpackers through the Feb 2011 Christchurch Earthquake - we thought we would share it :)

Hello. I stayed in base during the time of the February earthquake. I just wanted to thank you. My trip to New Zealand was an adventure as a whole; the earthquake was and still remains to be the most horrifying experience I have gone through. Now being on the other side of the world and seeing the disaster from a far I am just so grateful for my life and glad we are safe. I didn't think I was ever going to see my belongings again. My clothes, ipod, heck, even my hair cutting shears- I would of been fine saying goodbye too. I can't express enough how amazing it was to not only get a working camera back but seriously everything plus someone's sock. I felt a feeling of relief, closure even when I looked through my pictures of my trip.

You helped me get out of my arrested feeling of shock. thank you for everything you did.

Jenny Fradley

Thanks Jenny for your email :)

The 2011 February Christchurch Earthquake that struck the canterbury region in New Zealand's south island was a 6.3 on the scales.

The Earthquake caused widespread damage accross central Christchurch, with a number of buildings needing to be demolished and rebuilt...Base Backpackers being one of them :(

Bye Bye Base Backpackers Christchurch, hello new era…

A sad day for many of us, as we said our last goodbyes to a building that for 10 years has been our second home.  It's been the home for so many wonderful backpackers Traveling through Christchurch.  So many laughs, Parties, Friendships and memories have been shared within the walls of Base Christchurch hostel.

I remember fondly our opening day in 2001, we had 11 people stay with us that first night. I showed each guest around individually, and one nice Irish Fellow told me:

"Absolutely grand, this will be THE Hostel to stay at in Christchurch"   and so it began...

Over 750,000 people have  had the pleasure of staying in this hostel over its 10 year history, which was a testament to just how popular it was.

Plans are now underway to build a state of the art backpacker facility that will be the envy of the industry, and i just can’t wait to get the new Hostel open.

We’ve learnt plenty over that time, we know what our guests want, we know what they don't want, and we cant wait to deliver the Best Hostel in Christchurch.

VISIT CHRISTCHURCH!!!

Christchurch’s planning and rebuild is now under way, everything is back operating except a small part of the CBD, so please do come and enjoy what this proud province has to offer, you won’t be disappointed.

So  as they say - Watch this space…Christchurch and Canterbury are on the way back up, may not be bigger but certainly will be soooooooooo much better!

Cheers
